The Christian adventure isn’t one that can be comfortably lived half-heartedly. It is an all out life, to be lived for the pleasure of God. Lived in such a way, the Christian life is a satisfying life. If you live it half-heartedly, then you come to the realisation that nothing satisfies, neither the old life or the new.
I was ‘saved’ the day after my 25th birthday. My mum and step dad were hosting a young Ugandan Pastor, named Daniel, at their house, and invited me over to meet him. Following dinner, Daniel and I spent time talking. He asked me about my opinion of Jesus and of faith. I expressed a level of belief in Jesus but had clearly stopped short of surrendering my life to Him.
To this revelation Daniel simply said, “Ross, you can’t sit on the fence, you are either for Him or against Him”. At that moment, I realised that in all my years of running away I had never been faced with having to choose. God had cornered me and I knew that I had to make a decision for or against Him. I wasn’t impressed with being caught. I won’t tell you what went through my mind but it was rude! However, I knew that this was a crucial moment in my life, and I decided to surrender to Jesus completely.
Nothing much changed for six months until I attended an Alpha Course. I, spent the time after each meeting with family and friends listening to their amazing stories about what God was capable of and how He had changed them. I realised the Christian Life was not a dry and dull journey into religion, but it was live interaction with a living God. I was hooked!
That moment of choosing which side of the fence to be on was the beginning, but it wasn’t the end. Since that time I have needed to refresh my commitment to God on multiple occasions. I would live fully surrendered to the best of my knowledge, and then God would lovingly reveal a new place where I needed to raise the white flag. This is how I continually learn to grow in faith and the Christian life, and it’s always turned out to be for my good, and for my blessing. Surrender is, at its most basic, a removal of obstacles between me and knowing God better. When seen in this light, at least in my opinion, there is nothing worth holding fast to when God asks me to let go. Every time I surrender a specific thing to God, He saturates me with His love and presence.
In the light of the presence and friendship of God, the value of all this other stuff pales into insignificance. My fear used to be: “If I give over all these parts of my life, life will become boring, monochrome, superficial.” Nothing could be further from the truth. Any adventure requires sacrifice. Those that embark do so knowing that nothing is surrendered in vein; It’s all necessary for the adventure ahead.
If you find yourself sitting on the fence today, do yourself a big favour, face your fears and doubts and choose the adventure of a lifetime with a living God. I can promise you from my own experience that true victory lies in surrender when it comes to a dynamic relationship with God!
I would love to hear your testimonies of being transformed by God. Please leave a comment below.
