God has created us to be creative. We are made in His image. We are meant to dream, and dream big, but a dream that remains just a dream never changes anything. There is a day when our dreams have to become more than flights of fancy. There is a day when we must live them out. There’s one major threat to the fulfilment of our dreams more powerful than every other threat combined. That threat and how to defeat it is the subject of today’s post.
I was praying early one Sunday morning in the summer of 2003 when God gave me a vision. It lasted about 30 minutes. I wasn’t aware of time passing. In fact I wasn’t aware of anything outside of the vision. That vision was of two people patrolling Eastbourne’s Beachy Head reaching out to the suicidal. That vision was the catalyst for creating Beachy Head Chaplaincy Team, a crisis intervention team that has helped 1000’s of despondent people.
Over the months that followed, as I shared the vision for patrolling this notorious place, people asked me, ‘Why hasn’t anyone though of this before?’ I couldn’t answer their question, but I didn’t sense that I was the first person God had asked. I felt that I was the first person who said ‘Yes’. It wasn’t long until I was proved right.
A short while after receiving this vision, I met with a church leader and shared what God had shown me. We talked through the various aspects of what I planned to do. In the middle of the conversation he told me of a similar idea that a prayer group had after praying for the suicidal at Beachy Head, but they didn’t follow it through. They had a dream but it never became reality. It remained just a dream.
The number one threat to your dream
Why had they not pursued that dream? The leader told me when they thought about it, it seemed too hard. This is the simple truth: the number one threat to your dream becoming reality is not a lack of money, it’s not a lack of time, it’s not a lack of ability, it’s not a lack of helpers, it’s not that person who discouraged you, it’s not even the devil. The number one threat to your dream is you…. you are the biggest threat.
Even though I had experienced a vision from God there were many occasions during the year it took to set up BHCT where I nearly gave up. All of the reasons for giving up seemed perfectly valid at the time. None of them were. I was afraid we could not afford it – Since 2004, BHCT has raised over £1.5 million pounds in donations. I was afraid that we couldn’t find the volunteers – Dozens have volunteered since BHCT began. I was afraid that we couldn’t really help – Hundreds of lives have been saved, 1000’s of hurting people have been helped. Hundreds continue to be helped every year.
The one choice that defeats the threat of you
Most of us sabotage our dreams for the same reasons. We’re afraid to fail. The risk of failure is seen as something to avoid above all else. Yet the path to success is often paved with failure. Consider the child learning to walk for the first time. He would never walk if he was too afraid of falling to try, but he has a dream to get to the other side of the room, and one way or the other he’s going to get there!
You’ll see your dream come to life if you resist the fear of failure. Do you want to live your dreams? Then say to yourself: ‘I am not afraid to fail! If I fall down then I will get up, brush myself off, and try again’. Your Father in Heaven is with you to cheer you on, ready to help at every step.
I wrote this blog the day my website rosshardy.org went live. This is my third attempt to build an online presence to share my Christian experience so as to encourage others. For us to struggle is part of the process of building Godly character—don’t give up and settle for less than your dream’s fulfilment. Don’t give up!
What is your dream? Whether large or small it matters to God. If you chose to fly against the fear of failure, you’ve taken your most important step towards success. Take a step of faith, partner with God, and learn to live your dream.
