Perseverance is not often an applauded characteristic of a victorious Christian life. Without perseverance many of our greatest dreams would never materialise. But too many of us are quick to give up when trouble arises. In today’s post I talk about the importance of persevering for your breakthrough, when things don’t go to plan.
I started Beachy Head Chaplaincy Team with a budget of £900. In fact, that money was the entire contents of our little Church’s bank account. I knew we had a need for £1000’s more because of a clear vision from God.
I began to plan and trusted that God would provide. The problem was, God’s idea of timing and mine were miles apart. It would have been so easy to give up or slow down when the money didn’t arrive when I hoped it would. God did provide eventually. The first gift was a cheque for £7000!
Fast forward four years and the team were costing £50,000 a year to run. The problem was,in order for the vision to grow we needed more money. So we applied for grants, and an extra £15,000 came in, but to our dismay the other donations dropped and we ended up with the same amount of money at the end of the year as the year before.
Often we only had enough money in the bank to pay the bills for the following week. It would’ve been all too easy to give up trying to move forward. It was impossible to develop the team because the money just wasn’t increasing. It was discouraging and people were saying ‘Just stick with what you have, it’s as good as it’s going to get’. But I knew enough about perseverance not to give up. God had given me a vision and He would bring it to pass.
‘And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.‘ (Galatians 6:9)
It took another three years before we saw any significant change to our income. Firstly it doubled to over £100,000, then the following year donations exceeded £200,000 in a single year. That increase in money helped save hundreds of lives, but if we had given up in the hard times we never would have seen the breakthrough!
‘There’s more to come: We continue to shout our praise even when we’re hemmed in with troubles, because we know how troubles can develop passionate patience in us, and how that patience in turn forges the tempered steel of virtue, keeping us alert for whatever God will do next. In alert expectancy such as this, we’re never left feeling shortchanged. Quite the contrary—we can’t round up enough containers to hold everything God generously pours into our lives through the Holy Spirit!‘ (Romans 5:3-5 MSG)
It was troubling to not always know if we could pay the next bill. We had the choice: We chose to trust God, and because of that we now we have a an amazing testimony.

Your breakthrough is just at the end of the path of perseverance
So many give up on their dreams because of troubles. When life becomes difficult that’s precisely the time to trust God and hold on to your vision. In fact, the Bible says those very troubles can produce the patience you need. I have seen God faithfully answer His promises to me and even now there are prophecies over my life yet to be fulfilled. I do know that in due season I will reap a harvest if I don’t give up. So will you!
Whatever your troubles, your answer is on its way, so don’t grow weary—Persevere!
