In my final blog in the series on ‘listening to the Holy Spirit’ I will leave you with a challenge: God wants you to recognise what an extraordinary position you are in.
In John 16:7 Jesus says something that is truly remarkable:
‘Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.‘
Jesus says that it is better that He goes away, because when He does the Helper can come to us. In most of our minds it would seem more advantageous to have Jesus walking alongside us, but Jesus disagrees. We are better off with the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is described by Jesus in many terms. In this passage, He is the Helper. Now Jesus helped the disciples in so many ways, but He had something better in mind: The very Spirit of God living inside of His disciples, helping them in every way to live out their royal identity as sons and daughters of their Heavenly Father.
The Holy Spirit helps us to understand who we are. He helps us to think differently. He helps us to overcome temptation. He helps us to stand in the face of persecution He helps us to live outside the box of our own self applied limitations. Ultimately, He helps us to live life to the full for our benefit and for the benefit of others.
You and I have God Himself living inside of us! This is so profound.
The early disciples, following just a few words and a moment of time in His presence, left all to follow Jesus. Holy Spirit wants us to be just as captivated. If you want to be the best you can be He is the answer. If you want to know Jesus or the Father better He is the answer. If you want comfort He is the answer. If you want to change the world and make history He is the answer.
In examining the subject of ‘listening to the Holy Spirit’ we have covered a number of ways in which He chooses to communicate with us. Ultimately, it’s all about a relationship with Him; His making himself known to us for our sake, and through us for the sake of others.
If you have Him, you have all that you need to thrive whoever and wherever you are.
We are among the most privileged people ever to have lived. We are a dwelling place for God Himself.
We would love to hear more about how you are learning to hear from Holy Spirit. Please leave a comment below.
