“Listen to the Holy Spirit” is a phrase often talked about, but what do we mean by it? How do we recognise His voice? How does He speak?
I was recently asked to elaborate on what it means to listen to the Holy Spirit. Whilst I was thinking about this subject, three recent experiences came to mind which emphasise the importance of knowing His voice.
Although played out in different cafes, each scene was the same. I was buying drinks from the counter while my friends were sat in another part of the cafe. The place was full of people chatting, eating and drinking. My friends weren’t in view or talking loudly, but I became aware of how easily I could make out their voices over all the other noises in the cafe. It took no special effort on my part to discern their voices; in fact, their voices caught my attention because they easily broke through the noise of other conversations around me.
What was the difference? What made their voices discernible over all the other noise? Familiarity. I know their voices because I have a relationship with these people. I have spent time with them, listening to them.
So before I get to some of the different ways that Holy Spirit speaks to us, I need to emphasise this point: If we want to hear Holy Spirit in the midst of the noise of our lives as well as in the quiet moments, we need to spend time building a relationship with Him. The more we listen, the more familiar His voice becomes to us. Then, the smallest whisper can cause our ear and our heart to turn to Him.
There are no short cuts to relationship. In these days of drive-through, instant messenger, speed dating, microwave meals, home delivery, no one has yet found a way to shortcut living in relationship. It takes time and commitment, but it is no hardship if we enjoy the company of the one we are in relationship with.
So it is with Holy Spirit. He calls you into a deepening relationship with Him, and the great thing is, He knows you completely and fully accepts you. This ‘vital channel’ between you and Him is both the safest and yet most adventurous relationship known to mankind.
As for how He speaks, well that will be the subject of another blog, but I will leave you with a list of some of those ways He speaks to whet your appetite!
- Internal voice
- Spiritual happenings
- Through others
