What do we do when we face stubborn difficulties in our lives which won’t conform to what the promises of God say about them? How do we get a breakthrough?
I remember the first time I was faced with a slab of concrete that needed removing. I was a teenager just out of school, helping someone on their farm. The job of breaking the concrete fell to me.
I was given a sledgehammer and told to start breaking it up. I hit one part and then another. I rained blows all over the slab, but nothing happened. The concrete stubbornly sat there unbroken. Metres of it sat there defiantly unmoving. In twenty minutes of sweat and toil I had accomplished absolutely nothing.
Now I knew nothing about breaking up concrete, so I assumed I was facing an especially stubborn and unbreakable piece, a unique blend immune to sledgehammers. Naively, I had expected it to break like an egg shell under the first blow.
Eventually, one of the men from the farm took pity on me. It turned out that the problem wasn’t the concrete at all, but how I was using the hammer. His advice was simple: “Get the hammer, find a spot near the edge of the concrete and hit it, then strike the same spot again and again, and don’t stop until it breaks. At first the hammer will only dent the top of the concrete. As you keep hitting it, you will think nothing much is happening, but here in lies the secret. The man who knows the power of the hammer won’t give up. For he knows that although nothing much seems to be happening on the surface, underneath the concrete is being weakened. If you stay focused on hitting that one spot, and keep going, it will break.”
He was right. With my new found knowledge, and my faith in what the hammer could achieve, it took me no time at all to break off the first chunk. Soon I had the whole slab broken up.
In Jeremiah 23:29, God says through the Prophet Jeremiah:
“Is not My word like a fire?” says the LORD, “And like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?”
This simple revelation about His word gives us great insight. His word is like the hammer. When we apply it to a situation and we don’t immediately encounter a change we mustn’t give up.
We ask God for wisdom, we select the right word for the job, and then we apply His word to the circumstance. We declare His word. We pray it. We thank God for what He is doing. All along we keep focused on the target, and we don’t stop until we see the breakthrough.
Under the onslaught, some situations break up very quickly, some take a little longer. It doesn’t really matter to the man or woman who knows the power of the word, for they understand that it is only a matter of time until the breakthrough comes.
Today, I pray you will receive fresh encouragement in your difficult circumstances. The word of God is a hammer in your hands, and it’s effective against every stubborn thing you face.
I would love to hear about your victories. Please leave a comment below.
