The concept of hope is as varied as the people who long for it. For many, hope is just a forlorn longing for something different, a moment in time when something better is imagined for just long enough to give respite. Godly hope is different; it’s roots are centred in the character of God. It’s because of Him that we can hope, even in desperate or conflicting circumstances.
This morning I woke early. I have been sitting in my study for a couple of hours now drinking tea, making declarations, and chatting to God. As I write, it’s still dark outside and I feel outrageously blessed.
Don’t get me wrong, I love my bed, but there is something about the early morning, before the world really gets going, that gives an uncluttered place of encounter with God. It’s the deepening knowledge of God which I experience in these encounters which has inspired me to write this blog.
Ultimately, God is beyond our full comprehension, but He’s not unknown, and He is certainly not distant! Our privilege as His kids is an ever deepening relationship with Him, where we are consciously getting to know Him more and more.
The beauty of the word of God and our interaction with Holy Spirit is that God loves to reveal facets of His character to us. Father God has the tender love of a Daddy for His children. That is who we are, His children, loved and valued wildly beyond our comprehension.
This is where I see the deepest roots of hope. They find their source in the love and goodness of God, and our belonging in His family.
Just consider Romans 8:31-32:
‘What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?’
The Father gave His own Son for us. Jesus died and was raised to life to rescue us and transform us. After just a few minutes contemplating this verse there should be no doubt about the Father’s willingness to move heaven and earth for us. He’s already paid the highest price He could possibly pay. If that isn’t a declaration of His loving generosity towards us, I don’t know what is!
Hope is not a naive attitude found in those who can’t face the facts. Hope carries life directly from the Father’s heart to ours.
Hope gives us courage to shrug off the chains He has already broken for us and live in the abundance of our birthright. We are children of the King, with a promise of extravagant life, bought by the blood of Jesus; bought for us because of the Father’s goodness and love.
Take a moment now to encounter God. Let Him reveal His love and goodness afresh to you. As He does see how He breathes on your heart and releases fresh hope.
Daddy God loves you with an everlasting love. He’s on your side!
