I used to ride horses. The best piece of advice I was given when jumping was, ‘When approaching a jump, don’t look down at the fence, look over and beyond it‘.
Why was it good advice? Because generally our focus becomes our destination. Believe me, you don’t need to fall off and hit many fences before you are keen to take notice of advice like that!
If you want to clear a fence, you need to set your focus beyond it.
It’s not a matter of ignoring a jump. I would see the obstacle, line my horse up, plan my approach considering the number of strides my horse would take, then as I approached I would set my gaze on where I planned to end up: on the other side of the jump, still on my horse.
I have found overcoming challenging circumstances in our lives can be approached in much the same way. When we face a circumstance to be overcome we ask God for His word for the situation. His word is filled with hope; It always lines us up to safely clear the obstacle. Once we have the promise of God, we can set our gaze to landing the other side. We begin to declare that promise over our circumstances until things change for the good.
We need to understand that we’re not using the word we have received to plead with God that He do something. When He gives His word to us He has already declared He is going to do something. We just start to line up our faith up with it. We declare what will take place. Romans 10:17 gives us an insight into what is happening:
“So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
Faith connects with the power of God to carry us over. As we begin to speak the promise of God over a situation, our faith rises. When I rode and first saw the obstacle, I hoped that I would be able to get over it. Faith, as we read in Hebrews 11:1, is:
‘The substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not yet seen.’
Faith plots our landing long before we physically arrive.
With God by our side, there is no obstacle that cannot be overcome. We just need to get His word for the situation and fix our eyes to the other side.
Do you face difficult circumstances today? Do you have a word from God about them? If not, spend some time to hear from Him. This is the most important step. Then you can take the word you have received and make a declaration out of it. Speak it over your circumstance.
Remember, your focus becomes your destination.
As you focus on landing beyond, you line yourself up with what God is doing.
Before you know it that seemingly impossible obstacle will pass beneath your feet.
